Those who’ve read Inherit the Stars have already had an introduction to the hero of Courting Disaster, Captain Navene Jagger. In that story, Jagger is hero Sair’s nemesis. As the former fiancée to Sair’s love interest, Captain Drea Mennelsohn, and a respected officer in both the Carduwan and covert Network fleets, Jagger presents formidable competition for Drea’s affection.
Or so Sair believes.
Here’s the original scene in Inherit the Stars when the illustrious…or is that notorious?…Captain Jagger is first introduced:
A tall officer followed them into the room—a handsome Carduwan with a rakish smile. Captain’s insignias adorned the shoulders of his crisp, impeccable uniform. His hair was black, and pushing military regulations for length. Something about the way the man’s gaze kept sweeping over Drea’s form put Sair on immediate alert.
“Captain Jagger,” the admiral said. “It’s been a long time.”
“Excuse me, Lt. Commander.” Sair set his drink on a low plexi-table and left the redhead in his wake. He moved into place at Drea’s left as the Carduwan exchanged pleasantries with Ry, though he was fully aware of Captain Jagger’s scrutiny in his peripheral vision. Locking gazes with the man, Sair kept his expression neutral.
Jagger’s frown turned into a reluctant smile and he thrust out his hand. “Navene Jagger. Haven’t had the pleasure. You are?”
“Sair.” His eyes flicked to Drea. “Specter crew.”
A dark cloud passed over Jagger’s eyes. “Glad to meet you.” He straightened, trying to appear as tall as Sair, and when he failed, winked at Drea and swaggered over to Jaeo to greet him in a loud voice and with a thump on the back.
Captain Jagger loitered near the viewports, his gaze making frequent trips to Drea. His interest was clear. Seven calendars of not getting what he wanted apparently hadn’t swayed Jagger’s determination. Some men were slow learners.
Though Jagger wasn’t a very likable character in the novel, I had plans for him to play a much larger role in the saga ahead.
His final appearance in Inherit the Stars hinted at his potential to transform into a true hero.
“Hailing Specter.” Sair recognized the voice of the Carduwan wing leader on the com system. Jagger.
“Acknowledged, Image,” Drea replied. “Thanks for the honor guard escort to Purmia. Good luck to you and your Carduwan Fleet.”
“Permission to speak to Sair on a private channel.”
Drea hesitated. “Ears in, sim. Jag wants a one-on-one convo.”
What could the man possibly have to say to him? Sair put on his earset.
“This is Sair.”
“You’re a good man, Sair. A better man than I gave you credit for…maybe a better man than me. A better man for her, at least. Take care of her.”
Jag’s voice came over the main com again. “Carduwan Escort, signing off.”
“Acknowledged, Jag. Fly true.” Drea switched to main com speaks. “I don’t suppose I should ask what he said?”
Sair glanced up. “Let’s just say we’re parting on good terms.”
I had my work cut out for me in redeeming Jagger and turning him into true hero material in Courting Disaster: StarDog 2. The story begins three years after Inherit the Stars, where Jagger is still struggling to accept how his destructive actions and over-inflated ego have cost him the love of his life and left him with a deep sense of loneliness and loss. To survive, he’s hardened his heart and become a military monk whose career is his sole focus. Ambition and ego are the only passions that drive him now.
And then someone enters his universe who stirs his craving in alarming—and often vexing—ways.
Ketsia Tayah. And she’s brought her past and her pet StarDog with her.
Before Jagger can earn his HEA, he’ll need to pay a hefty price. Confess his transgressions. Make a sacrifice. Be brought down the proverbial peg…or six.
And the first pride-shattering blow happens in the opening chapter of Courting Disaster.
