Check! Just What Is Pauline Baird Jones Checking?

Why did you join the Pets in Space 2 anthology?

I don’t think “join” is the right word. lol  Veronica and I came up with the idea for Pets in Space 1 and somehow found ourselves doing it again because of a) wonderful authors with b) amazing stories that were loved by c) awesome readers. And we couldn’t pass up a chance to work with HeroDogs again (speaking of wonderful, amazing and awesome).

If you could bring back one extinct animal, what would it be, and why?

I would bring back the Dodo bird. We have a lot in common, including the fact that we are both extinct (Goodreads says I died in 1999). Little is known about the dodo (check), it was believed to be clumsy (okay, I am it might not have been, but we’ll go with: check), but they now believe it was well-adapted to its environment (I’m well adapted to being a dead hermit – check!). Houston, I think we have a winner!

If you could create/design an animal, what would it look like and what could it do?

If I could design an animal (which is actually kind of a scary thought because I can’t even draw stick figures), it would probably be more about what it *wouldn’t* do, or perhaps a mix of do and don’t do. It wouldn’t shed and it either wouldn’t need to poop OR it would clean up that itself. It would be bad a** with intruders and cuddly with me and our grand kids. Cute as a bunny and fierce as a lion. It would also need to feed itself. Our late cat, Felix, was such a prima don. His water had to always be fresh and he made sure his food preferences were a moving target. Even though I fed him and scooped his poop, he still liked our son best. So my pet would need to like me best, or at least I’d make its top three.

What do you love about writing science fiction romance?

What is NOT to love about science fiction romance? There is the whole “boldly going somewhere” without any of the downside of boldly going somewhere yourself (see Hermit above). There are heroines and heroes, that may or may not be purple. There is action, adventure, space battles, and kicking tush. There’s the romance… sigh. And those happy endings seem like *more* when the opposition are scary aliens. It’s the intersection of all my favorite things in book. And it’s IN a book. How cool is that?
